Setting up a Teamcenter Part Structure
Log on to Teamcenter
In order to access an existing Teamcenter PLM repository, you will need to
- Obtain from the system administrator a URL link to the repository, a user id and password
- Install the Teamcenter client on your local computer
- During installation, created at least one 4-Tier Server Configuration, linking a server URL to a user-selected Connection Name.
- Launch the Teamcenter client and log in with User ID, Password and Server (Connection Name). Click Login.
Create Precise BOM
Create a folder (File → New → Folder) under the Home folder to contain the item structure (call it Satellite).
With the folder selected, go to File → New → Item. Select Item, then Next.
Press Assign to automatically assign ID/Revision.
- Enter a name in the remaining required field, Satellite, and press Finish.
Create four more items, Instrumentation Subsystem, Propulsion Subsystem, Power Subsystem, and Control Subsystem, then close the New Item window. The figure below shows Home folder afterwards.
Expand the Satellite item, select the revision A;1, and go to File → New → BOM View Revision…
In the BOMView Revision window, "Create As: ", select "Precise" and click OK.
- Expand items Instrumentation Subsystem, Propulsion Subsystem, Power Subsystem, and Control Subsystem; multiple-select (Ctrl+Click) their A;1 revisions; and copy (Ctrl+C).
Expand Satellite revision A;1 and double-click A-View to open the Structure Manager. Select Paste (Ctrl+V).
CRITICAL: Enter a reference designator for each part usage. Without a reference designator, persistent connections cannot be made between SysML and Teamcenter parts and part structure generation and updating may not work as expected. Save the BOM window (Ctrl+S) or File > Save.
- Go back to Home and expand View to make sure the part usages are visible.
- In the following steps, the reader will revise the Teamcenter part structure by adding new parts.
- Select the Satellite folder again and create two more items, Visual Camera and Thermal Camera.
- Select revision A;1-Satellite and go to File → Revise. Press Finish and close the window.
CRITICAL: When modifying a Teamcenter item version through the rich client interface, always use the Revise command to identify the new version. Because of the way Teamcenter assigns unique internal id's, external software tools like Syndeia may not recognize a change to the Teamcenter structure unless the item version ID changes by letter, e.g. from A;1 to B;1. The check-in/check-out process in Teamcenter only changes the sequence number of the version ID, e.g. from A;1 to A;2, and Teamcenter's internal ID allotment does not make it possible to uniquely identify A;1 versus A;2.
- Select revision A;1-Instrumentation Subsystem and go to File → Revise. Press Finish and close the window.
- Select revision B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem and copy (Ctrl+C)
Under revision B;1-Satellite, double-click B-View to open the Structure Manager.
- Paste (Ctrl+V) revision B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem
Select revision A;1-Instrumentation Subsystem and click the red arrow on the toolbar to Remove Design from Product. Confirm removal.
Add the reference designator for revision B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem.
Note: Steps 16-20 are necessary to explicitly increment item revisions used in a Precise BOM (indicated in the Structure Manager by the green highlighting, incidentally). For an Imprecise BOM, conversely, these steps would not be necessary, as the revision of Instrumentation used by Satellite system would be automatically incremented as the revision is made.
- Return to Home and create a BOM View for revision B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem (Select the revision and go to File → New → BOM View Revision…). We can create this one as Imprecise.
- Multiple-select revisions A;1-Visual Camera and A;1-Thermal Camera and Copy (Ctrl+C).
Double-click B-View under B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem to open the Structure Manager, and paste (Ctrl-V).
Enter a Reference Designator for each BOM line, as shown in figure.
Go back to Home and open B-View under revision B;1-Satellite again. Expand B;1-Instrumentation Subsystem and the whole BOM structure is visible, with the Precise BOM View for the top level green in contrast to the Imprecise BOM View for the subsystem.
