Creating a Part Structure in Windchill

Log on to Windchill

  1. Obtain a URL link, user name and password from the Windchill system administrator.
  2. Access Windchill from the browser on your local computer and enter user name and password.

Create a new top-level Part (Primary End Item)

  1. Expand the Navigator pane, select the Browse tab, click on the Recent Products icon and click on View All. This will open the detailed product page.

  2. Select New Product.
  3. Fill out info about this new product. Click OK. A new page with details about the product appears.

  4. Go to the Windchill Navigator pane and select the Browse tab. You can see the new product (e.g., Satellite) in the list of recent products. Within the product you should see different pages which present information about the product from different perspectives. The Folders page will show you the folder structure for that product, i.e. how are the parts of that product and their related models (e.g. CAD, Word, Excel) are organized. By default, the navigator pane will auto hide. You can pin it by selecting the icon shown as shown.

  5. Select the Folders view of the new Product to open the Product window. Click the New Part icon and create a new Part (also called WTPart) named e.g., Satellite in the main product folder.

  6. In the New Part window, enter information about the part. Select YES for the Create as End ItemEnd Item is a top assembly part in a product structure that is manufactured and delivered to customers. End items are identified with the icon:   . Click Finish when done.

  7. On the Navigator pane, select Details under the Satellite product, and open the Details window. Under the End Items list at the bottom, , right click on the new part, and select Set As Primary End Item.
  8. You can now see the Structure page under Satellite in the Navigator pane. Click on Structure to see the product structure.

Create new folders

  1. Go to the Folder page for the Satellite product and create 4 sub-folders under the Satellite folder, as shown. To create a new folder, use the new folder icon (highlighted). Fill out the name and description for each folder, e.g. for Propulsion folder, state description such as This folder contains parts and related documents for the Propulsion system of the Satellite.

  2. To learn more about folder management, including editing folder names or deleting folders, refer to the Windchill Help Center > Windchill Fundamentals > Managing Your Work > Working in Folders and Folder Structure. To delete a folder you can select it (check mark) in the folder table and select Actions > Delete. The Actions menu is highlighted in green.

Create part structure

  1. In this section, we will create a part structure with 4 sub-parts (Control System, Power System, Propulsion System, and Instrumentation System) under the SAT-101 product. To create a new sub-part, select the parent part (SAT-101) in the Structure view of the product (Satellite), and then select Insert New → Insert New as shown.

  2. In the New Part window, begin by setting Type as Part. Add a name (e.g. Control System) and location (e.g., /Controls). Check Create CAD Document at bottom. Click Next. In the New CAD Document window, select Creo as the authoring application, select the Controls folder, and click Finish.

  3. After creating 4 new parts (sub-systems), the product structure looks like shown below. Note that, in this example, the CAD models for Control System and Power System were created as Creo assemblies, while those for Instrumentation and Propulsion System were created as NX assemblies.

  4. Add a Reference Designator for each new part created
    1. Select the part in the Identity pane
    2. Right-click and select Edit → Edit usage attributes
    3. Under Reference Designator, enter a part name. This will become the part property name when the part structure is transferred to SysML.

CAUTION: A Part in Windchill without a Reference Designator will not generate a corresponding Part Property in the SysML part structure.
